They can make a real difference in reducing pain in several conditions by altering the mechanics of how patients walk.
What Are Rocker Bottom Shoes?
Rocker bottom shoes are designed with a thicker, curved sole. The design allows the foot to roll or rock when walking or running instead of the traditional heel-to-toe motion. It promotes a more even distribution of pressure when walking and running. This feature is beneficial for heel pain and ball of foot pain conditions.
Rocker Bottom Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis
Rocker shoes are often recommended to patients with plantar fasciitis because they can help reduce strain on the plantar fascia and reduce overpronation. Since the plantar fascia is the ligament that becomes inflamed in plantar fascia rocker shoes can play a solid role in a comprehensive treatment plan for this condition. A study reported in Gait and Posture in September 2018 indicated less force on the Achilles tendon helped decrease strain on the plantar fascia.
Rocker Bottom Shoes for Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis treatment is very similar to the treatment of plantar fasciitis--including the recommendation of a rocker bottom shoe. The curved sole will take pressure off the Achilles tendon when moving. Another study done in March 2015 and reported in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport also showed that rocker shoes might be useful in unloading the Achilles tendon.
